Every year a group of Stockton ceramicists throw over 250 bowls for the TideWater Art Gallery’s “Souper Supper”. This is a huge event and fundraiser for the gallery and a lot of fun for the artists that participate. This has turned into a collectors event where patrons choose their bowl as they enter from a very diverse collection of work. As an ceramic artist and potter, this has become one of my favorite projects that I look forward to every year.

Here is part 1 of creating a small bowl…

A small bowl starts with a small 1 and a quarter pound ball of wedged clay…

The ball of clay is centered on the throwing wheel…

It’s center is opened up…
The sides are pulled up and out…
The wall thickness and profile is refined..
The lip is compressed for strength and the base is tidied up…
This is what comes off the wheel head.
I still need to let it stiffen up a bit and trim the foot before I add the surface designs before it’s bisque fired.

Here is a very short video of the process.

Stay tuned for more demos.
